It's kind of amazing that this place exists. It's in the most random spot you can imagine. One of those where you look at the map and say, "OK, it's on that corner." But then you get there and say, "Is this it?" Only to turn around and realize that, yes, this is it.
Not a big place. It's got a union social club or VFW feel to it. Quiet save for the TV he has on. 42 years, he said, and I would assume it's this same, old guy. He's really nice. I mean, I'm sure he's one of these old guys that doesn't take peoples shit so, he's really nice if you're nice. If you're an ass, then he's probably not that nice.
I had the beef goulash. I can't get goulash locally and I live by one of the largest metro areas in the country. No one appreciates it. I adore this kind of food though and I made it a point to come here after I stumbled across this place just poking around on the map.
I thought it was excellent. Everything was so tasty and well spiced. The sauce kind of covered everything, but you wanted everything in the sauce, including the bread (which is some amazing bread). You get a free salad bar with dinner, which is also very old school. The pickled veggies were the best thing about it, though I didn't try the beets. Otherwise, it's a normal, small salad bar.
So why does this place exist? I mean, I guess the guy is just holding onto it. It's a relic. You catch people like me who actually seek out this food while most of the town goes to tapas bars, gastropubs and the hundred or so Latin American restaurants here. The owner seemed genuinely happy to have me eating his food and especially happy that I liked it and cleaned my plate. And that's a nice thing to have at a restaurant; where they actually appreciate you liking the food that they've put time and effort into, instead of an engineered and benchmarked generic menu of mostly Chef Sysco.
Hungarian in Danbury, Connecticut. Why not?

I don't often write reviews but I am ecstatic to have found authentic Hungarian food so close to home. This place is truly a gem. When you walk in you get the feeing that you've been welcomed into a Hungarian home and you're there to try home cooked meals from their own family recipe. It's a very comfortable, unassuming atmosphere and the food is to die for. Having been to Hungary several times I was ready to sample the things I'd had there. We ordered the ham and mushroom crepe, cucumber salad, and stuffed cabbage appetizers. For mains we had the chicken paprika, goulash soup, and beef stroganoff. I wish I had photos to post but everything was devoured very quickly. I have to say our favorite was the mushroom and ham crepe. 10/10. Awesome place. Will be going back!

If you are looking for terrific authentic hungarian comfort food this is a wonderful little place. John, the owner, server, chef and host has been in this spot for 42 years. We started with stuffed cabbage rolls that were amazing, served with sour cream, just the way gramma used to make. We then moved on to chicken paprikash and Hungarian beef goulash served with dumplings. Both were fantastic and the Czech beer was perfect with it. Topped it all off with Apricot crepes. Fantastic dinner and so reasonably priced. It is in a residential neighborhood but close to 84. Parking is in the back. Enjoy your visit, it will be worth going out of the way for something special.

We had a really great experience, here.

We have been getting tired of the restaurant scene in our small town. New expensive restaurants keep opening up, and they all seem to be variations on the same theme: exposed bricks and beams, fried Brussels sprouts, pork belly, PEI oysters, braised short ribs, and a fancy street taco of some sort. It's always the same, and our bill is always $100+.

The Goulash Place is a good cure for all that pretense. The unlikely location in a residential neighborhood with decor that looks authentic to 1977 is the first sign that no one is trying to impress you. Instead, they are trying to feed you. This is a mom and pop establishment with Hungarian comfort food. It is the Hungarian equivalent of my grandmother's Polish cooking. The food was hot and delicious, filling and deeply satisfying. Two entrees, two beers, and a dessert came to less than $50.

This is not the place to go if you are impressed by trendy and new. I felt like I was back in Grandma's kitchen...when Love meant lots to eat.

This place has been here for forty years run by the same chef/owner so check it out before he retires.  If you like heavy Eastern European old country cooking then you will like this place.  The food is authentic and delicious. My only criticism of the food it seems to be salty but that may be my salt light tastebuds.  I had pea soup, stuffed cabbage and beef goulash with a Carlsberg beer and it was $28. Great value.   The place is little with maybe 6 tables and is on the worn side.   The waitress was nice but not very efficient.  I think she was new.
